ResumoThe first three decades of the twentieth century saw the bold development of thyroid surgery, mainly in the treatment of large goiters from iodine deficiency and Graves' disease. The introduction of iodine in foodstuffs and of radioiodine (131I) in therapy for Graves' disease has largely obviated the need for surgical treatment of these two entities; however, in many benign thyroid problems, the surgeon continues to participate actively in diagnosis and treatment. Cooperation between pathologist and surgeon has resulted in an ordered clinical and pathologic classification of thyroid malignancies as well as a more precise understanding of their diagnoses, therapies, and prognoses.
