ResumoCurrent concepts on the role of glucocorticoid hormones in the regulation of inflammatory and immune responses depict this role as being inhibitory. Over the past decade, however, a large variety of studies have shown that glucocorticoids also exert stimulatory effects on immune function, suggesting that the present concept of the role of glucocorticoids in the immune system is not sufficient and needs to be extended. Here, Jan Wiegers and Hans Reul ask how these apparently paradoxical effects fit together and what their functional and pathological significance might be.
