HERETICS, SLAVES AND WITCHES - AS SEEN BY GUINEA JESUITS c. 1610 BY P.E.H. HAIR (University of Liverpool) The Jesuit 'Mission to Cape Verde' in the early seventeenth century effectively pursued its evangelical aims on the African mainland only in Sierra Leone, and only through two priests. Of the seventeen Jesuits sent from Portugal to the mission, most died in the Cape Verde Islands, the missionary base, or retreated sick, shortly after arrival; and of the handful who reached the mainland of Guinea, the only priests who survived for long service there were Father Baltasar Barreira who served between 1604
