On behalf of the officers, the Board of Trustees, the Planning Committee, and the staff of the American Association of Orthodontists, I am pleased to invite you, your family, and your orthodontic staff to attend the 99th Annual Session in San Diego, California. The extensive scientific program concentrates on orthodontic goals for the next century. Join us in this waterfront city as we chart the course for quality treatment, learning and sharing with orthodontists from around the world. General Chair, Dr Lee R. Boese, has done a remarkable job of helping to make our vision of the 99th Annual Session a reality. The program should satisfy your orthodontic educational needs completely, in a relaxing environment. The Exhibit Hall will contain over 290 different companies offering the latest state-of-the-art orthodontic products and services available to the practicing orthodontist. The Opening Ceremonies this year will be held Saturday evening in a spectacular outdoor tented area, allowing more time in scientific lectures and the Exhibit Hall. The Doctors’ Scientific Program was developed by Drs Peter M. Sinclair and Patrick K. Turley. The four concurrent lecture halls with focused topics such as Biomechanics, Interdisciplinary Treatment and Care, Early Treatment, and Treatment Outcomes, will fulfill your continuing educational requirements in every aspect of orthodontics. The Advances in Clinical Orthodontics Program is loaded with brief presentations on the ever-changing art and science of orthodontics and should not be missed. A special full-day scientific session on Interdisciplinary Care designed for orthodontists, other dental specialties, and general dentists is scheduled for Monday. Review the scientific session descriptions carefully to maximize your learning experience at the Annual Session. The Orthodontic Staff Program provides a wealth of information designed for the busy orthodontic practice. Topics such as financial efficiency, clinical expertise, laboratory techniques, interoffice communication, practice marketing, and infection control are all part of the program developed by Orthodontic Staff Co-chairs, Dr Steven A. Dugoni and Kathi Kinney. Please refer to the separate Orthodontic Staff Preview Program for complete program and registration information. Local Arrangements Chair, Dr John E. Grubb, and the members of the Pacific Coast Society of Orthodontists are pleased to have you join them in sunny San Diego. The shore-side city is full of fun and interesting things to do and enjoy while you learn at the Annual Session. In keeping with this atmosphere, we are suggesting casual attire for this year. From the museums at Balboa Park to Sea World to shopping in La Jolla, the activities are as endless as the beautiful weather. Visiting the beach, riding the oceanside roller coaster, or cruising the Bay can make your trip complete. The San Diego Annual Session will be an educationally stimulating experience for you and your orthodontic staff, as well as a great vacation for your family. We look forward to seeing you at the 99th Annual Session, May 14-18, 1999. The San Diego Convention Center will contain the Exhibit Hall, Registration, Special Events, the Doctors’ Scientific Sessions, and other meetings. The San Diego Marriott Hotel & Marina, located next to the convention center at 333 W. Harbor Drive, will contain the Orthodontic Staff Scientific Sessions and one of the Doctors’ Scientific Sessions. The Hyatt Regency San Diego Hotel, located next to the San Diego Marriott Hotel & Marina at One Market Place, will be used for the AAO House of Delegates business meetings on Friday, May 14, and Tuesday, May 18. Annual session attire The official dress for all lectures and events at the 99th Annual Session will be resort casual (dress shorts, shirts with collars, short-sleeved shirts, skirts, dress slacks, coats with no ties, etc) unless otherwise noted. The average temperature in San Diego for May is a daily high temperature of 69° Fahrenheit (21° Celsius) and an evening low temperature of 58° Fahrenheit (14° Celsius). A jacket or sweater is recommended for evening activities. The House of Delegates will meet on Friday, May 14, from 2:00pm-3:30pm, and on Tuesday, May 18, from 8:00am-5:00pm, at the Hyatt Regency San Diego Hotel in the Manchester Ballroom. Reference Committee Hearings will be held on Saturday, May 15, from 9:00am-12:00pm, at the San Diego Convention Center. Constituent Caucuses will be held on Friday, May 14, from 8:00am-12:00pm, and on Monday, May 17, from 8:00am-5:00pm, at the San Diego Marriott Hotel & Marina. Continuing education hours (CE hours) The AAO is an American Dental Association (ADA) CERP Recognized Provider. The formal continuing education programs of the AAO are also accepted by the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) for Fellowship/Mastership credit. It is the responsibility of the individual attendee to submit any necessary continuing education credit documentation to their individual state for verification. There are varying requirements for each state on course verification and documentation. Please contact your state directly to determine what items are necessary to satisfy continuing education requirements. The name badges of AAO Members, International Members, Student Members, Nonmember Guests, and Orthodontic Staff ONLY are preprinted with a bar code for use in verifying continuing education hours. Exhibitor, spouse/guest, and child name badges do not include the bar code, as these categories are not eligible for credit. You MUST scan your badge through the scanner located outside the meeting room prior to entering the room. Do not remove the name badge from the holder, face the bar code on the bottom of your name badge toward the black arrow on the scanner and scan through. The light will change color when you scan to indicate acceptance. You do not need to scan the badge again when you leave the room. If the scanner is not turned on at the beginning of the course, the course is not eligible for credit. NOTE: Name badges with ribbon(s) may have to be removed from the name badge holder to properly run through the scanner. Please look for the light to change when scanning, indicating a complete scan. You are encouraged to pick up a copy of your CE Hour Report at the end of each day or at the end of the meeting. CE Hour Reports can be received from the Grand Lobby near Registration (Hall A) in the San Diego Convention Center or from the Upper Lobby in the San Diego Convention Center. Scan your name badge through the scanning machine, and a full report will be printed. Please allow 2 hours after the lecture for it to appear on your report. Courses ending after 4:00pm will not be available on the reports until the next morning. Attendees are responsible for collecting their own documentation for continuing education hours. Disclosure of Financial and/or Beneficial Interest Presenters who have financial and/or beneficial interest in any product or service related to their presentation are marked with an asterisk (*) next to their name. Disclosure of visual enhancement Presenters who enhance, modify, or alter photography, computer images, radiographic images, or other visual images related to their presentation are marked with a star (h) next to their name.
