Resumo

An important and largely accepted clinical application of prostaglandins (PG) is the induction of abortion in the second trimester of pregnancy. The methods commonly used prior to the introduction of prostaglandins for the termination of second-trimester pregnancy, intra-amniotic instillation of hypertonic saline, and hysterotomy, were unsatisfactory. This study reviews and discusses the question: are the PG-induction methods of today satisfactory?I shall first deal with some general factors in PG-induced abortion in relation to efficacy and applicability. These factors are of varying importance in different countries and conditions.
