ResumoAbstract Electron spin resonance spectra and optical spectra have been used to characterize the environment of VO 2+ ions adsorbed on amorphous aluminium hydroxide gels. The ion is found to occupy sites of well-defined symmetry uniformly distributed throughout the amorphous structure. Both ESR and bonding parameters give evidence that delocalization of the vanadium(IV) unpaired electron takes place, due to covalency in the binding of the ion.
