ResumoACONSIDERATION of the literature (1)3 dealing with the extraction and purifica-tion of the hormones of the anterior pituitary makes it evident that active -ATJLL preparations of the growth, adrenotropic, thyrotropic, gonadotropic and lactogenic factors have been obtained. Moreover, some degree of purification of each of these protein hormones has been accomplished by the removal of other proteins. In addition to the above'inentioned hormonal factors, preparations of one or more of the various metabolic hormones of the anterior pituitary have also been described. The methods employed for the preparation of these hormones and the properties of the products obtained indicate that these substances are proteins or proteu'like in composition. The hormones may be extracted from the gland by aqueous, acid, or alkaline solutions. They may be precipitated by alterations in hydrogen ion concen-tration, by organic solvents or by inorganic salts.
