ResumoAccording to COROMINAS (1980: Dicctimaro Critic0 Etimo&ico Castellano e Hispanico, Editorial Gredos, Madrid) the term espundia first appeared in the Snanish thirteenth centurv work Libro de 10s Cavallos.applied to a tegumentary ulcer with excrescences found in horses.The sponge-like nature of some verrucose lesions probably suggested the name, derived from the Latin spongia (esponja).Apparently this entity is well documented in mediaeval Portuguese writings as espunlha, where it was noted also to produce sponge-like tumours in horses.The identity of this granulomatous nasal disease of horses is not clear to us and we publish this letter in the hope that this can be clarified.However, it seems logical to assume that the Spanish in Peru encountered a similar condition in man which they called espundia.For many years it is likely that the term was applied to any tegumentary lesion of a papillomatous or verrucose nature.Thus
