ResumoA reliable method for quantitative analysis of gallotannin in plants has been devised. Gallotannin is hydrolyzed with acid, and gallic acid in the hydrolysate is then assayed using rhodanine. This method is very specific; no interferences from other plant phenolics, including ellagic acid and condensed tannin, have been observed. The rhodanine assay has a sensitivity of 0.01 mg of gallic acid and a precision of 2.2% (relative standard deviation).
