ResumoOne of the potential advantages of Web-based learning systems (WBLSs) is their provision for interactivity. This paper considers the process of evaluating the interactivity of such systems. The method adapts a heuristic approach usually employed for usability evaluations. A three-way model of interactivity (3-WMI) is proposed. On the basis of this a provisional set of interactivity heuristics is developed. The method and heuristics are then assessed through a trial evaluation using three different WBLSs. Two of the systems are taken from a MSc course at a local university. The third is a commercially available system. The results of the trial are compared with usability evaluations and are found to be favourable. The trial was also used to improve the set of heuristics. It is concluded that heuristic evaluation provides a cheap, intuitive and practical method for the assessment of interactivity.
