Resumo

The spores of S. schenckii do not possess a capsule in vitro or in vivo. The halo around the spores seen in formalin-fixed tissues is an artefact and is localized within the spore. The asteroid body is formed by the precipitation of an antigen-antibody complex which is deposited on the surface of the spore.
