Abstract The failure of lindane to control several species of mites, including Acarus siro (L.), at an English cheese store was investigated. A. siro isolated from the store were found to have a high level of resistance to lindane when compared with eight laboratory stocks. The need for improved control measures in cheese stores and the likelihood of other mites developing resistance are discussed. A simple technique is described for detecting resistance to lindane in A. siro .
