ResumoAbstract 1,4-polybutadiene and a derivative thereof with 9-phenanthryl groups were degraded with 4-octene or 7-tetradecene using either a (CH3)4Sn/WCl6 or a C2H5AlCl2/WCl6 catalyst. For the degradation of partially substituted polyalkenylenes by olefin metathesis, product distributions were formulated for both cases: statistical scission and equilibrium. The initial stage of the degradation reaction showed induction periods in the formation of the low molecular weight products but not in the overall polymer degradation. The rate of formation of low molecular weight products changed within the initial stage. These results may be due to the formation of cyclic degradation products. In particular, at the beginning of the reaction, hydrochlorination products were formed. Interaction between the WCl6 and the polymer was proved by viscosity measurements. A mechanism for the starting reaction is also discussed.
