Notes 1. Denoting those schools which work with pupils who have a special educational need (SEN). 2. Throughout the paper, pseudonyms are used to protect confidentiality. 3. Power Rangers is a children's television show. 4. S Club (7) refers to a UK popular music group. 5. Eastenders is a UK-based soap opera. 6. ‘Alex’ is 14 years old and has a statement of Special Educational Needs, with quite a rare medical condition alongside (not disclosed here for reasons of confidentiality). He has been attending the playscheme for the past 8 years. 7. It is worth noting here that Alex was not excluded from the research because he was known to the researcher, but because he did not fit the sample requirements of being a wheelchair user. This reason was fully explained to Alex on more that one occasion; however, the extent to which he understood, or agreed with my reasoning is unknown. The possibility of offering him a ‘compensatory’ role within the research was considered, however it was decided that this would have been unethical on the grounds that his contribution would not have factored in the final piece. 8. My emphasis here is on the word obvious as this will determine where the boundaries lie when they are set or regarded differentially by various researchers or organisations. 9. The reactions discussed here are based largely on the personal observations and interpretations of an able-bodied adult of a child with SEN. It is not in any way assumed that they build a full understanding or paint a full picture of the effects that the research might have had.
