In March 2004, the GeoNet Project, operated by GNS Science, implemented an Internet-based questionnaire. The aim was to provide an objective and automatic assignment of Modified Mercalli (MM) earthquake shaking intensity and location based on answers to a set of standardized questions. Since the first year of implementation, the number of reports received has increased tenfold. Besides providing valuable information for emergency response agencies, the reports led to the enhancement of isoseismal models and better understanding of the regional effects of earthquakes in New Zealand.
