Resumo

Some randomly selected occurrences of fossil cephalopods were studied in order to bring forth evidence that vertically inbedded, chambered shells are not uncommon, although seldom reported in the literature. The palaeoecologic significance of such occurrences in relation to nekroplanktonic dispersal, the recognition of ancient strandlines, speed of deposition of sediment and depth of sediment accumulation is reviewed and discussed. This study is based on chambered cephalopod occurrences in the Lower Ordovician of Jämtland, Sweden, the Middle Triassic (Hauptamuschelkalk) of Mianfranken, Germany, the Jurassic (Callovian) of Yorkshire, England, and Brora, Scotland, the Neocomian (Lower Cretaceous) of the Iardumovacia Valley of western Romania and the Middle Albian (Lower Cretaceous) of Kopet Dag, Turkmenistan, U.S.S.R.
