ResumoVariationist studies have shown that the raising or pretonic vowels [e, o] occurs mainly due to a process of regressive assimilation triggered by the high vowel of the following syllable – minimo, piru, curuja, bunita -, called vocalic harmonization (Bisol, 1981; Schwindt, 1997, among others). However, the present research on the pretonic [e] in the rural speech from Paraná presents high indexes of raising in phonic contexts with mid or low vowels in the following syllable (PONTES, 2001).
