ResumoIn the pulse excitation of a mercury discharge tube, several spectral lines of Hg II are enhanced by introducing helium into the mercury discharge tube. Especially the 6150 Å line of Hg II is enhanced strongly and the laser oscillation of this line can be observed. To investigate the mechanisms of the enhancement and the laser oscillation of the 6150 Å line, time-resolved spectroscopic study was attempted. From results of the measurements, it is concluded that the collision between the metastable helium (2 3 S) and the metastable mercury dominates the formation of the population invertion of the 6150 Å laser transition.
