ResumoIn 2000, Don Elligan introduced Rap Therapy as a psychotherapeutic intervention for working with at-risk youths, primarily African American males whose identities were highly influenced by rap music. Rap music can engage a population of youth who often enter counseling apprehensively (Elligan 2000 Elligan, D. 2000. Rap Therapy: A culturally sensitive approach to psychotherapy with young African American men. Journal of African American Men, 5(3): 27–36. [Crossref] , [Google Scholar], 2004 Elligan, D. 2004. Rap therapy: A practical guide for communicating with youth and young adults through rap music, New York: Kensington. [Google Scholar]; Tillie-Allen, 2005 Tillie-Allen, N. M. 2005. Exploring hip hop therapy with at risk youth. Praxis, 5: 30–36. [Google Scholar]). This article reviews rap culture and how it relates to inner-city youth, as well as the benefits of using Don Elligan's Rap Therapy with at-risk youth. Implications for using Rap Therapy as a time-effective intervention by school counselors are included.
