ResumoInternational treatment of the Law of the Sea during the 20th century falls into three clearly defined periods. The third and current phase is the most important and is characterized by the three United Nations Conferences on the Law of the Sea (1958, 1960 and 1973–1982). The last (UNCLOS III) produced the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, which entered into force in November 1994 and is now the most important component of this major branch of international law. One of its largest and most basic elements is maritime boundaries and zones. Individual aspects of this element discussed here are the outer limit of the territorial sea, loxodromes and geodesies, charting maritime boundaries, and the outer limit of the continental shelf. The 1982 Convention, now the basis for resolving most maritime boundary disputes, is a major contribution of the UN to the maintenance of international peace and security.
