The literature data on the kinetics and mechanism of the oxidation of organic compounds of various nature with hydrogen peroxide in aqueous solution have been analysed. A generalised kinetic scheme is described for the radical–chain decomposition of hydrogen peroxide in the presence of organic compounds for which a rate equation for the process has been found by the method of quasi-steady-state concentrations for long chains. Partial expressions have been obtained for the rate of oxidation of various organic compounds with hydrogen peroxide allowing for the nature of the organic compound.
