ResumoThermal and mechanical treatment effects on a raw smectite (E), its acid activated product (Ea) and a commercial activated smectite (F) were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and isoelectric point (IEP) measurements using the transport number method. The samples were divided into two groups: samples of one group were heated between 350 and 950°C and those of the other group were ground for between 300 and 3600 s. Both treatments, on natural and activated smectites, shift the pH of the IEP to higher values. IEP values of activated smectites (Ea and F) were higher than that of natural samples (E), explained by a removal of structural cations and their superficial adsorption.
