When a prospective customer receives a demo diskette, a copy of the Columbia Library System Quick Book is provided. This 79-page, 7 x 9 stand-up flip chart provides a guided tour of the system's features. Nice! Cataloging A library may enter new catalog records, create a new record by copying and modifying an old record, edit an existing record, or delete a record using the Cataloging module. Records can be deleted based on a range or record ID numbers or date. Card and spine labels can be printed for a group of records. The system validates all entries against existing authority control records. First names are entered (main entry, added entries, and series), followed by subjects and titles. A Biblio Root screen contains numeric fields, fixed fields, imprint related fields, call number, location and copy fields, and serials fields. An additional optional notes field can be used for abstracts, reviews, or other textual information. The cataloger can toggle between a MARC-formatted display or a standard ISBD catalog card. Authority Control capabilities allow a library to establish, add, and maintain an authority control file. Unique text is stored in the authority file only once so duplication of data in bibliographic records is eliminated. Authority Control records can be established for names, subjects, and titles (including series). Notes cannot be added to the authority record. See and see also cross-references can be established. Global search and replace allows the library to make changes to a form of entry. Authority records can be exported and subsequently transferred to another system. The system produces several reports to aid the cataloger in creating and maintaining the Authority Control file. Online Patron Access Catalog Columbia Library System's online catalog provides the traditional author, title, and call number indexes. Author, subject, title, and notes keyword searches are provided, including a combination search using a keyword from different keyword indexes, e.g., subject and notes keyword search. As the user enters the search request, the system will search for and display the records found should the user pause during the search entry process. Thus, if the user enters whi, the system will display records which begin with whi. The user can select a displayed record or continue searching. When a user selects an item for display, the system will display the brief citation screen (call number, title, author, date of publication, and availability status) when more than one title matches the index item selected. …
