ResumoThis article examines the personality and policies of Cardinal Giacomo Antonelli, the controversial Secretary of State of Pope Pius IX. Commencing with the polemical picture of the Cardinal that has persisted to the present, an attempt is made to objectively assess the career and character of the most important Minister of Pius IX and his role during the course of the Counter-Risorgimento.
