ResumoAnimal studies have shown that A. haemolyticum, by itself, has pathogenic potential. In humans the organism is associated with pharyngitis and skin ulcers and is often coisolated with other pathogens, particularly S. pyogenes. Present studies are not definitive, because the baseline isolation rates from different sites from healthy people have not been established and a search for other simultaneous causes of disease, such as viruses, mycobacteria, or anaerobes, has not been completed (30, 36, 37). Maximum detection of A. haemolyticum from patients with pharyngitis can be achieved if human blood agar plates are used instead of SBA for throat cultures and if the plates are incubated for 48 h. The organism could be detected more often at extrapharyngeal sites if it were realized that coryneforms, when recovered in significant numbers, should be identified minimally to the exclusion of A. haemolyticum.
