Resumo

The Ear: Comprehensive Otology Canalis RF, Lambert PR, eds. Philadelphia: Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2000, 900 pp. As the title indicates, this text attempts to cover all aspects of otology in a single volume. The work is impressive in its scope and depth of coverage. As expected for a work of this size, numerous authors contribute chapters in the areas of their individual expertise. Doctors Canalis and Lambert are commended for their editorial oversight and share authorship in 17 of the 54 chapters. The initial sections of the book are devoted to anatomy and physiology and otologic diagnostics. Seven additional sections discuss clinical disorders and their management according to anatomic site. Additional chapters on the history and future of otology make interesting reading. An outline of the text introduces each chapter, and key points are summarized at the conclusion. The text is amply illustrated, although few figures are in color. Most major textbooks of otolaryngology do not cover the specialty of otology as completely as it is presented in this work. Similar efforts to cover the subspecialty are either outdated or more limited in scope compared with this text. The book is highly recommended for residents, fellows, and practitioners seeking a detailed reference text on otology.
