Resumo

This report describes fossil leaves and roots occurring in shales of the Codó Formation near Codó City, in the east of the State of Maranhāo, northeastern Brazil. These fossils, included in a single species, Nymphaeites choffatii (Saporta) Teixeira, are associated with the fish Dastilbe elongatus Silva Santos. The plants, interpreted as limnobenthos, are classified as Nymphaeaceae, which are considered to be primitive Dicotyledoneae. A table showing the chronostratigraphic and geographic distribution of Nymphaeites (Saporta) Teixeria is included. The occurrence of these fish and plant megafossils in the Santana and Areado Formations confirms an Aptian age for the formations. It also indicates a lacustrine facies for the sediments of the Codó Formation.
