ResumoResults of quantitative correlations between Late Cenozoic benthic foraminiferal faunas from Central West Timor and Recent faunas from the Australian-Irian Jaya continental margin provide high resolution palaeobathymetric criteria for geohistory analysis. For the last 3 Ma, two periods of uplift were found in parts of the Central Basin on West Timor, one from 2.4 to 1.6 Ma B.P. which decelerated from 5 to 0.5 mm per year, and a second which started about 750 ka ago and then accelerated to acquire rates of up to 20 mm per year during the last 100 ka. The step-wise uplift history documents the response of this part of the foreland basin to the collision of the Australian continental margin with the Banda Arc.
