By use of this Green's function the response of an accepted earth model to any superficial mass layer such as the variable ocean tide can readily be calculated. The theory is presented in this paper. Numerical results will be given in a later publication. References Alterman, Z., H. Jarosch, C. L. Pekeris, Oscillations of the earth, Proc. Roy. Soc. London A, 252, 80–95, 1959. Hobson, E.
