Resumo

The scale, product of the oxidation, is a layer of oxides that is formed on ferritic stainless steels surface during hot rolling processing due to the reaction with the environment. The oxidation reaction consists of electrons transfer from the element reducer to the free electronic levels of the element oxidized.Except for niobium, if present in the scale as carbonitrides, others chemicals elements react with oxygen adsorbed.During the oxidation, a gradient of concentration of metals is formed from the surface to the interior of the metal. For this gradient the diffusion occurs in the direction to the surface. The concentration of the elements in the scale is a function of the diffusion coefficient.Concerning performance of the steels under oxidation, the steel type 430E has more oxidation resistance than the type 430A.The niobium addition reduces the oxidation intensity.
