Resumo

The impetus for this study was provided by recent reports of a significant excess of skin cancer following chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). In this series of 258 CLL patients from 4 Ontario Cancer Treatment Clinics, 13 second cancers of which 5 were skin were observed following the diagnosis of CLL. Neither the observed incidence of all second cancers nor of skin cancer alone was statistically significant. Possible reasons for the differing results obtained in this study are discussed, and it is concluded that the acceptance of an increased incidence of cancer following CLL is not justified at the present time.
