Among the departments of the Pays de la Loire, la Sarthe has stood out for a long time by the rapid expansion of its farming concerns which maintains the deficit of these installations. According to generally well known principles, it is therefore not surprising to observe the concentration of landowners in recent years (1988-1993) which has been stimulated by a series of economic, social and environmental measures. Expansion equally takes place from individual decisions which are motivated by more or less rational choices. It would be good to evaluate the reasons the farmers have given in individualised surveys. A range of detailed plans carried out on these occasions reveals that the increase in the size of farms can lead to a detrimental breaking up of the land structures in the present climate.
