Resumo

He practiced general dentistry there for a short time after graduating in 1916 from the dental school of the University of Pennsylvania 9 During World War I, he served 2 years as a dental officer in the armed forces.Around 1919, he took over a practice in Hong Kong from a dentist who was in ill health.Three years later he returned to the United States to become a member of Dr. Angle's first formal class in Pasadena, Calif. He and Angle's other followers raised sufficient funds to construct the first building devoted exclusively to the teaching of orthodontics.Matt was a classmate of Holly Broadbent, and his mentors included Spencer Atkinson, George Hahn, and Cecil Steiner. From this elite core of disciples developed the Edward H. Angle Society of Orthodontia. After graduating in 1924, Matt practiced orthodontics in Holl~vood. He was one of the first to use the recently introduced edgewise mechanism. His marriage on June 28, 1925, to Elizabeth Ann West was to last almost 68 years and produce two children 9Finding that many of his patients resided in Beverly Hills, Matt moved his practice there in 1938.His patient roster became a veritable "Who's Who" of the movie colony, such that he acquired the nickname, "Orthodontist to the Stars."Among those whose smiles he created for the screen were Ginger Rogers, Dana Andrews, and Loretta Young. He also treated the children of Bette Davis, Ronald Reagan, Jack Benny, Bob Hope, James Stewart, and others too numerous to mention. He retired in 1978 at the age of 82.Although he was one of Angle's staunchest advocates, he was one of the first to reject the nonextraction dogma. It is said that he and Steiner, who were together in a study club, were the ones who planted the seeds of premolar extraction in the mind of Charles Tweed. His friends remember him as a reserved, friendly person who was never too busy to give counsel to those less experienced. He was one of the principal organizers in the early years of the Angle Society.
