Resumo

Abstract A gridded ionization chamber has been constructed with the aim of determining its ultimate energy resolution in alpha spectroscopy, utilizing a cooled FET pre-amplifier of the type normally employed with semiconductor detectors. With suitable mechanical collimation of the alpha particles, their fine structure has been measured with an energy resolution of ∼11.5 keV (fwhm), achieved using an Ar+0.75% C2H2 mixture as the filling gas.
