ResumoUsing their experience on the McGregor Diversion Project in British Columbia the authors provide a perspective on environmental concerns of water transfer. The paper discusses some aspects of water transfer associated with the McGregor Diversion Project, discussing principal factors which make such schemes unique from other water management projects. Specifically the paper deals with the faunal transfer question in terms of a donor stream, diversion structures and receiving streams. The paper concludes that study of faunal transfer should be undertaken for all water transfer projects. However, such studies should be reviewed in the context of the assessed values of the resources which might possibly be affected; and in terms of multiple use of the waters. The authors point to limiting and deciding factors which can affect the decision rationale in faunal transfer studies; the importance of understanding the human values associated with such projects; and the lack of precedent for such studies and associated with such projects; and the lack of precedent for such studies and associate study rationale.
