tion with mitral valve prolapse.3 Similarly, calcification of the mitral anulus is associated with mitral prolapse and the Marfan syndrome, and also with systemic hypertension and idiopathic hypertrophic subaortic stenosis. It has been suggested that the hemodynamic stress associated with these conditions may be causally related to the development of calcification in this area.4 It is possible that this mass represents an extension of the initial annular calcification potentiated at the base of the posterior leaflet, or alternately calcification of a portion of redundant valve tissue. We suggest that calcified atrial mass be added to the spectrum of echocardiographic and pathologic features associated with the mitral prolapse syndrome.
