ResumoAbstract Solutions of Mn(THF) 2 Br 2 and MnI 2 and tertiary phosphines in tetrahydrofuran at 0°C are oxidised by dioxygen or electrochemically giving deep blue-purple solutions which have identical electronic spectra. The principal band with λ max at 570 nm has ϵ>9000 1 cm −1 mol −1 . Tertiary phosphines have been shown to be oxidised to the corresponding tertiary phosphine oxides. No evidence was found for the reversible formation of dioxygen-manganese complexes.
