ResumoThe characteristics and dynamics of tropical rain forest are strongly determined by climatic factors. Thus, this study aims to check if the litter production of this vegetation type responds to changes in precipitation and temperature. The study was conducted in a tropical rain forest montana in Parque Nacional da Serra dos Órgãos, which were installed 20 conical collectors to collect the litter production from march 2004 to february 2005. This material was sorted into leaves, branches, reproductive material and other, oven dried and weighed. The Contribution of litter was 5.6 Mg ha-1 yr-1, represented by 60.9% of leaves. There were differences among months for all fractions and response to precipitation and temperature that occurred in previous months, adding information easy to obtain the physiological response of plants in this environment , which are key features of this tool to qualify as a good environmental indicator.
