ResumoThe mechanism of chain te rmina t ion in the polymer iza t ion of e thylene ca ta lysed b y t r i i sobutyla luminium÷TiC14 has been invest igated b y comparison of the viscosities of decalin solutions of ordinary and deuteropolye thylene prepared under identical conditions. I t was found t h a t the two isotopic varieties of polye thylene do no t differ f rom one another . The absence of any effect of the subs t i tu t ion of hydrogen by deuter ium in the e thylene molecule on the degree of polymer iza t ion indicates t h a t there is no isotopic effect in the chain terminat ion reaction. The results ob ta ined are explained b y the t ransference of hydrogen within complexes formed b y the growing po lymer molecule and the monomer , the format ion of these complexes and no t their b reakdown determining the rate of the chain te rmina t ion reaction.
