Resumo

AbstractBorn in Los Angeles, Michael Monarch is a renowned guitarist who spent his teenage years in the mid-'60s seeing bands on the Sunset Strip. One of the bands he saw frequently was the Sparrow, who would disintegrate and re-emerge as Steppenwolf in 1967 with a 17-year-old Michael on guitar. He recorded three top ten singles with Steppenwolf, two of which—"Born to Be Wild" and "Magic Carpet Ride"—have become iconic staples of radio, film, and television. While with Steppenwolf, he also played on a session for Janis Joplin, spent a night jamming with Hendrix in New York, and appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show. After Steppenwolf, he was signed to Led Zeppelin's Swan Song label as a member of Detective and became part of Zeppelin's inner circle for three years during their mid-'70s period. He has released four solo CDs and for the last 17 years has been a member of World Classic Rockers, a rock supergroup which has reunited him with former Steppenwolf bass player Nick St. Nicholas and includes members of classic rock bands such as Santana, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Journey, and Boston. Here he speaks with author, musician, and Advisory Board member of Popular Music and Society Jim Christopulos.
