Resumo

Abstract A systematic study is given of the linear and nonlinear optical response at the fundamental absorption edge of CdS at room temperature. It is shown, that at low optical power the strong nonlinearity is due to the screening of excitons in the free carrier system. From single‐beam transmission experiments and degenerate four‐wave‐mixing the change of absorption and refraction, respectively, is deduced induced by one electron‐hole pair. Even 50 meV below the exciton resonances application of the strong dispersive nonlinearity at mW‐power is demonstrated.
