ResumoStudies of the seismicity of Chihuahua, Mexico, and determination of source parameters for the 1928 Parral earthquake suggest that the eastern portion of Chihuahua is currently undergoing extension. The Parral earthquake has similar source parameters to other southern Basin and Range-Rio Grande rift events. The focal mechanism for the Parral event, however, indicates northeast-southwest oriented extension, a direction that is parallel to neither the east-west oriented extension seen near the US-Mexican bordern nor to the physiographic province boundary between the Sierra Madre Occidental and the southern Basin and Range where the earthquake occurred. Intensity information for the Parral event and the 1931 Valentine, Texas, earthquake suggests that attenuation within the region lies somewhere between relationships developed for the eastern and cordilleran portions of the USA.
