Resumo

Single crystals of a Cu-2at.%Co alloy oriented for single slip were deformed cyclically at a constant plastic strain amplitude of about 10−3. The precipitation state of the crystals was varied from solid solution to strongly overaged. For all crystals the fatigue behaviour was found to be characterized by fatigue hardening, formation of persistent slip bands (PSBs) and subsequent softening. The fatigue softening could be attributed to particle dissolution within the PSBs. The appearance and properties of the PSBs depend strongly on the precipitation state. A plateau in the cyclic stress-strain curve was found for over-aged crystals, as occurs also for underaged crystals. The experiments were completed by some fatigue tests on peak-aged coarse-grained polycrystalline samples.
