ResumoWe have determined the cytostatic activity in vitro of an aqueous extract of Viscum cruciatum Sieber (Viscaceae) parasitic on Crataegus monogyna Jacq. (Rosaceae) in an attempt to demonstrate the possible influence of the host plant in the cytostatic activity. A mitodepressive effect of aqueous extract on the meristematic cells of Allium cepa L. (Liliaceae) has been observed. This effect increases with the concentration and the length of treatment, until complete inhibition of cells division was achieved. An attempt to revive the mitotic activity of the meristems was ineffective. The samples showed a moderate in vitro activity against HEp-2 cells. A 6-mercaptopurine solution was used as a positive control.
