Resumo

Vasari devoted one of his Lives of artists to Marcantonio Raimondi: he is the only print-maker to be so honored; all the others, even Lucas van Leyden, are bunched up at the end of Marcantonio's Life. As Raphael's associate, Marcantonio was considered the most important of all engravers for three centuries; his prints were avidly collected, and artists constantly used them as models (with the result that they have suffered a very high rate of destruction). In our century, however, Marcantonio's reputation declined to that of a mere technician, a reproductive engraver, a hack; by the middle of the century the commercial value of his rare and beautiful works had become negligible.
