Approximate formulas are given for calculating the matrix elements of the angular momentum operator of a symmetric top undergoing hindered rotation on an asymmetric molecule. These can then be used to calculate the effect of torsion on over-all rotation in microwave rotational spectra using the method of Wilson, Lin, and Lide.
