Resumo

On culture, umbilical swabs from 28 of 57 (49 per cent) neonates in a maternity unit yielded Bacillus cereus; of these 25 (44 per cent) belonged to a single unusual serotype. On further investigation the same serotype could be isolated from air samples, the hands of members of staff and 'clean' nappies from the hospital laundry. The nappies appeared to be the primary vehicle of B. cereus dissemination among the infants.
