Resumo

The shape of the Ni-Fe spherules found in the Isabela tektite, Pi-73, prevents them from exhibiting ordinary ferromagnetic properties except in magnetic fields in excess of 6000 oe. For this reason, the Owen-Honda equation ordinarily used at low fields to detect the presence of ferromagnetic impurity cannot be used to detect the presence of these spherules in tektites. The temperature-independent component of the magnetic susceptibility has been used to infer the presence of submicroscopic Ni-Fe spherules in this tektite. To account for the spherules in tektites a meteoritic hypothesis has been considered in which the spherules were formed (a) by injection of part of the meteorite body or (b) by reduction of iron minerals in the parent tektite material. The evidence favors meteoritic injection.
