ResumoTheoretical treatments of fibre reinforced/brittle matrix composites are reviewed in relation to the known behaviour of conventional glass-fibre reinforced cement (GRC) materials. The paper deals with the role of fibres in an uncracked cement matrix and then reviews analyses of the post-cracking behaviour. Different estimates of efficiency factors for orientation, length and bonding effects are compared. Final sections deal with ageing of GRC and the relation between bending and tensile strengths.
