Resumo

The 1999 Petra season was dedicated to the study of sandstone carving techniques. During the work, a complete and very well preserved iron pick (today in the Petra Museum) was discovered inside the so-called unfinished tomb (Brunnow n° 396), on the eastern flank of Al-Habïs. The tool was probably forgotten by one of the workmen when the tomb was abandoned, early in the building process. It is 32,6 cm long, double-pointed and would have had a wooden handle. It was used by the Nabataean masons in the initial phase of excavation of the chambers and was probably not suitable for work in the quarries.
